Mat likes to write in odd shapes. The piece "Sans Auline Avec Auline" begins with a saxophone melody that remains as a 7-bar ostinato throughout the piece. In a great arc of suspense, the other instruments are gradually added, forming counterpoint, harmony and counter-melody, only to leave the saxophone to reappear and stand alone at the end.
